Deep South

I got the idea to do this mix because of the track Deep South by Layo & Bushwacka. It was pretty big trend in the late 90′s early 2000′s to add blues vocals to electronic music – think the Play album by Moby so several of the tracks on Deep South is similar in style to tracks from the Moby Play album. I decided not to include anything off of Play because we’ve heard it so much – and he had even licensed all the tracks to adds so figured we’d heard it enough. Sorry Moby!

So Deep South kicks off quite upbeat with Deep South. Then I slow things down quite a bit with the downtempo track Pablo’s Blues by Gary Du Nord. It’s quite a nice track. Very bluesy and and sad. Then we’re back to a little more upbeat soul sounding track by X-Press 2 which features the vocals of Kurt Wagner. This one’s a remix by Quantic Soul Orchestra.

Well I had to include Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings. She sounds like she stepped off of the early 60s. Nice soul music – very retro!

Quantic’s Pushin’ On Featuring Alice Russel is another very retro sounding soul track. I love this. Amy Winehouse, you can retire now. This is the real retro music!!

St. Germain’s  My Mama Said is a very jazzy blues track. I really do love St. Germain and his music was so ahead of it’s time when he released his first album back in 1992 I believe. Chocolate Elvis by Tosca is a dark moody downtempo track that fits here nicely also – it’s a bit experimental for this mix but things by now have slowed down and we’re in a dark gritty jazz club in some sketchy part of town. So this fits quite nice!

I end the mix with Right On 4 The Darkness. WOW! What can I say about this track?? I love this the original and the remix of it. I think it’s one of my all time favorite pieces of music ever created. If you haven’t heard it well it’s time. It’s awesome!

Autumn Chill

Posted by admin in Playlist

I think chillout music and autumn go hand in hand. By the time fall rolls in you’re done with partying in the summertime and going out to parties at the beach, camping, vacationing so it’s time to unwind. Right?

So this track kicks in with the perfect track for Autumn Seasons (Hird Warmup Remix). It’s a mellow, jazzy R&B inspired track about seasons changing. Perfect for chilling at the house while a cold chill air is on the horizon. Next up is Once Upon A Time by Les Horizons. I love this track and how moody it is – perfect with the scratching and the midtempo moody beats. Lemongrass doing Journey To A Star is next. I love Lemongrass track Journey To A Star. The band is on electronic label Mole Listening Pearls. I can’t remember where they are based but I think somewhere in Germany. Anyway Journey To A Star is off of the Windows album and that albums is pretty amazing if you’ve not heard it or checked it out. Definitely do if you like laidback jazzy/spacy chillout electronica! Worth every penny.

I thought I’d throw in a remix in there and that’s where Sarah Vaughan’s Tea For Two remix by Chris Shaw comes in. The track is pulled in from Verve Remixed 4 album and it’s one of the better remixes off of that set. I love the Verve Remixed series and I hope they keep doing them as I can never get tired of remixes.

Going with the fall/autumn theme I thought I’d throw in Mia Doi Todd in there with a remix of Autumn by Nobody. Both Mia Doi Todd and Nobody are off of Plug Research Records in LA. A pretty eclectic label releasing music all over the place in styles. Check it out and see some of their bigger acts like John Tejada, Milosh and of course Mia Doi Todd.

I love the combination of Argentinean accordion music with a downtempo electronic beat. I especially love Gotan Project and several other acts as well as this series Buenos Aires – Paris so I decided to throw in this G-Spliff track AIres Del Sur (Tango Chill Outtake) – it’s pretty and moody and though provoking.

Next up is this pretty creepy remix of the Theme from Carrie (Gaudi Remix) from the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra off the Cinematic: Classic Film Music Remixed Album. It’s a dark and demented track but I thought it would be perfect here to darken things up a bit.

I had to throw in some Thievery Corporation in the mix and I choose the Middle Eastern inspired track (The Forgotten People). This track is quite beautiful and I can see a beautiful belly dancer doing the dance right now. It kind of reminds me of a scene from a film where a detective is at some dark seedy bar and a belly dancer is seducing the detective. Don’t you think so?

Things get a little faster after (The ForgotteN People) with I Love You by LTJ X-Perience. It’s a sexy repetitive beat with the sample of a male voice that repeats I Love YOu. It’s quite nice!

Next up some dub inspired beats by Tosca – John Lee Huber (Rodney Hunter Mix) off the Souvenirs album. A good one. This track keeps the beats moving faster still until My Darling Ralph Myerz track My Darling. This slows the mix down a bit. I love this track and it’s great to chill to. Finally Into The Light by Arkestra One is the track I end this mix with. It’s a perfect mellow instrumental floaty piece.

Beach Bar

Posted by admin in Playlist

Since summer has come to a close and things are back to normal and we’re all preparing for fall I thought I’d put together a summer chill themed mix. We’re all dreaming of laying out somewhere warm and sunny with lots of sunshine and where the cocktails are sweet yet strong and the music is chill with a little bit of kick to it.

Maybe throw in some jazz vibes and soulful lyrics. Or even some touches of laidback world beats with smooth downtempo. Well this mix does the trick and flows smoothly like the tasty cocktails that are made to order at the Beach Bar.

Enjoy!
